The ICF requirement, decoded.
Mentor coaching is one of the most misunderstood parts of the credential journey. Here is what the ICF actually asks for, in plain English, so you can plan your route with confidence.
10 hours, at least 3 one-to-one
The ICF requires 10 hours of mentor coaching for your ACC or PCC application. No more than 7 of those hours may be in a group, and at least 3 must be one-to-one, focused entirely on your coaching.
Over three months or longer
The 10 hours must span at least three months. Start in January and the earliest you can finish is April: development the ICF wants to see over time, not a crammed weekend.
Your mentor must be qualified
Mentor coaching only counts when it comes from a coach the ICF recognises: a credentialed mentor at or above the level you are applying for. Sarah is certified to mentor at ACC and PCC level.
Renewing your ACC? You need it again
ACC renewal requires a further 10 hours of mentor coaching in each three-year cycle, and those hours also count toward the core-competency CCE units your renewal asks for. PCC renewal does not require it, though mentor coaching hours can still count toward your CCE units.
Not everything counts
Coaching supervision, general skills training, and peer swaps without a credentialed mentor are all valuable, and none of them count as mentor coaching. The ICF treats them as separate categories, so check before you spend the hours.
Evidence, ready for your application
Your ICF application needs the record: your mentor's name and credential, the dates you started and finished, and the hours completed, split by group and one-to-one. You leave this programme with exactly that documentation.

What is mentor coaching?
Mentor coaching is coaching on your coaching. The ICF requires 10 hours of it, over three months or longer, before you apply for your ACC credential (and for ACC renewals): you coach, and a qualified mentor coach gives you structured feedback against the ICF Core Competencies so your skills genuinely develop rather than plateau.
Does this programme meet the ICF requirement?
Yes. The ICF asks for 10 hours of mentor coaching of which at least 3 must be one-to-one. This programme is 7 group hours plus 3 one-to-one hours: exactly the requirement, documented for your application.
Who can Sarah mentor?
Sarah is certified to provide mentor coaching at ACC and PCC level. Whether you are applying for your first credential or renewing, you are covered.
I already have my ACC. Do I really need mentor coaching again to renew?
Yes. ACC renewal requires 10 further hours of mentor coaching every three-year cycle, with the same shape as the first time: at least 3 hours one-to-one, over three months or more. The good news is those hours also count toward the core-competency CCE units your renewal needs, so the same programme does double duty.
How is this different from supervision?
Supervision looks after you and your practice as a whole: ethics, wellbeing, tricky client situations. Mentor coaching is narrower and skills-focused: it measures your coaching against the ICF competencies and helps you close the gaps. The ICF counts them separately, so supervision hours cannot stand in for mentor coaching hours.
How long does it take?
At least three months, because the ICF requires the 10 hours to be spread over three months or more. Most coaches complete the programme in three to four months alongside their practice.
What paperwork do I get for my ICF application?
A complete record of your mentor coaching: Sarah's name and credential level, your start and finish dates, and your hours split by group and one-to-one. It is exactly what the ICF application asks you to evidence.
What do I need to bring?
Recordings of real coaching sessions (we help you arrange practice clients through the community if you need them) and a willingness to be coached on your coaching.
